In a world drowning in a torrential sea of content, when we can no longer differentiate between “breaking news” and “opinion,” when AI is hoovering up our human experience and churning out dreck, it’s more important than ever to share our authentic human stories.
That’s what I strive to do here on my Substack. But with a twist. Because I just so happen to live in “the holy land,” or Eretz Israel, or Israel or Israel/Palestine - one of the most polarizing, fascinating, controversial, historical places in the world. A place about which everybody has opinions, and yet very few people have actually ever been or will ever go.
I didn’t start this Substack to try to make you like Israel, or to necessarily shore up the reasons you already might. I am Jewish but not religious. I am, like you, a human person deeply affected (and frankly worried) by politics, both local and global. But I’m no pundit; I don’t like supposing, speculating, and opinionating on such things beyond my direct experiences of them.
I simply try to share, by way of my stories, that life is deeply weird, flawed, happy, sad and wonderful wherever we are. And yes, I live in a pretty unusual place, so here on Confessions of an Expat in the Holy Land, you get armchair travel and an ersatz pen pal - all in one!
